Providing login information

When you use the universe design tool  you must first log into the Central Management Server (CMS). Note: This is not the case with universe design tool personal, there is no CMS and no login required. If you log with another user identification, you are entitled to all the rights of that user; you may also be restricted from certain commands.
You can run the universe design tool in standalone mode. This allows you to use it without connecting to a repository. In this mode, you can create personal and shared connections, but you can not access connections or universes stored in the CMS.
Note:
BusinessObjects passwords are case-sensitive. You can enter the following login parameters You provide the following login information in an identification box:
Login information
Description
System
CMS name
User Name
Your Business Objects user name.
Password
Your Business Objects password.
Authentification
Windows authentification mode.

Universe design tool session from the task bar:

  1. Click Start on the taskbar.
  2. Point to the Programs menu.
  3. Click the Designer program from the Business Objects command.

    The “User Identification” box appears.
  4. Fill in the login fields.
  5. Click OK.

    The welcome screen of the “Quick Design” wizard appears.
  6. Clear the Run this Wizard at Startup check box.
  7. Click Cancel.

    An empty session opens. The user name and repository name appear in the title bar.

    Login parameters

    The Login page contains parameters that you set to identify the connection and to enable you to connect to the middleware.
    You specify the following connection and login parameters.
    Parameter
    Description
    Type
    Connection type. Depending on your Business Objects product, you can create one of three connection types:
    Personal
    Shared
    Secured
    Name
    Identifying name for the connection. This name is available in the list of available connections. If multiple universes must access the same data, you can select this connection for each universe without having to define a new connection.
    User name
    Your database user name. This is normally assigned to you by the database administrator.
    Use Single Sign-On when viewing reports
    When selected, the user name and password used to access the repository are automatically used as database login parameters. See the BusinessObjects Enterprise™ 11 Administrator’s Guide for information on setting up Single Sign-On.
    Password
    Your database password. This is normally assigned to you by the database administrator.
    Data source name
    or
    Service
    If you are using an ODBC driver the data source name identifies the the target database. If you are using a native driver, the database name identifies the target database.

To set login parameters

  1. Select a connection type.
  2. Type connection name, user name, and database password.
  3. Select a data source from the Datasource drop down list box.

    Or
    Type the name for the database or datasource that you want to access.
  4. If required type the database or server name in the Database or Server text box. This box is RDBMS dependant.
  5. Click Next.

    Importing a universe

    You can import one or more universes stored in the repository. A universe that you import becomes available to you as a file in a subfolder of the Universe folder, or in any other folder you specify.
    You can import a universe while keeping it locked in the repository. As a result, another designer can import the universe but cannot make changes to it until you have unlocked it.

    Import options

    You can select the following options when importing a universe:

    Folder
    Lists all the universe folders that you are authorized to access.
    Open the selected universes
    When selected opens the selected universes immediately after import.
    Available Universes
    Lists all the universes in the selected universe folder. For each universe, the box lists the associated file name, universe name, and lock state. Within this box, you can select and/or lock the universes you wish to import:
    Description
    Text describing selected universe. This is the text that appears in the Description field in the Definition page of Universe Parameters.
    Universes are listed in the Available Universes pane as follows:
    Column title
    Description
    File Name
    Lists the file names of universes you can import.
    Universe Name
    Lists the universe names (long names) you can import.
    Locked
    Lists users who have locked universes. When a universe is locked, a padlock  is displayed beside the file name.
    If you lock a universe, do not forget to unlock it before exporting it if you want other designers to have access to it.
    To lock a universe, double-click its file name.
    Import Folder
    Displays the pathname of the folder in which the universes are to be imported. By default, the universe design tool imports universes to the universes root folder for the CMS.
    To specify another folder, type its name within the box, or use the Browse button to select another one.

    To import a universe

    1. Select File > Import.

      The Import Universe dialog box appears.
    2. Select a universe folder from the drop down list box.

      Or
      Click the Browse button and select a universe using the folder browser.
      You want to import a universe from this folder.
    3. If you want to lock the universe, double-click the universe name.

      A locked universe appears with a padlock symbol. To unlock a universe, double-click it again.
    4. Click a universe name.

      This is the universe that you want to import.
    5. Verify the file path for the import folder in the Import Folder box.

      The universe is imported to this folder.
    6. Click OK

      Exporting a universe

      You can export a universe to the BusinessObjects repository.

      Export universe prerequisites and options

      A universe must have a secured connection before it can be exported. If you created a universe with a personal or shared connection, you must create a new connection with a secured type and assign it to the universe.
      You can define the following export options:
      Option
      Description
      Domain
      Lists all the universe folders that you are authorized to access.
      Groups
      Lists all the users groups to which you belong.
      Universes
      Lists all the universes that you can export to the repository. For each universe, the box lists the pathname, file name, and universe name (long name)To select a universe, click its file name.
      To lock a universe, double-click its file name. When a universe is locked, a padlock  is displayed beside the file name.
      File Name
      Lists the pathname and file names of universes you can export.
      Universe Name
      Lists the universe names (long names) of universes you can export.
      Add
      Inserts universes in the Universes box. These are the universes you want to export.
      Remove
      Remove universes from the Universes box.

      Export a universe to the repository

      You must save a universe before exporting to the repository.
      1. Select File > Export.

        The Export Universe dialog box appears.
      2. Select a universe folder from the Domain drop down list box. If the universe is in another folder on the file system, Browse to the folder.

        If you want to lock the universe, double-click the universe name.
        A locked universe appears with a padlock symbol. To unlock a universe, double-click it again.
      3. Click a group in the Groups list box. This is the user group that uses the exported universe.
      4. Click a universe in the Universes list box.

        The Universes list box shows the names of the active universes.
      5. If you want to export other universes that are not open, click the Add Universe button, and then use the browser to select the other universes.
      6. Click OK.

        At the end of the export, DESIGNER displays a message.
      7. Click OK.
